Vandöd To Begin Recording New Album In June

Swedish black metallers VANDÖD will enter the studio in June to begin recording their second full-length album, "Dö". The follow-up to 2007's "As" is tentatively due in the fall.

Commented drummer Daniel Wikforss: "Our last album was a very raw and unpolished effort, and almost all of it was recorded in one takes, since we all set off with the idea that a debut album should be very 'true' and 'necro.' But we've got that stage out of the way now, and 'Dö' is going to surprise quite a few people. We're not prepared to go into too much detail yet, but let me reassure fans that we have no intention of becoming a technical band, that's just not what VANDÖD aspires to, but there will definitely be some changes to the production values."

Formed in 2004 by Wikforss and guitarist Henrik Wendel, VANDÖD was quickly joined by Niclas Ankabranth on vocals after he heard the duo playing around with a track while he was visiting the studio. The band was recently re-united with former bass player Ville Kemi (FALL OV SERAFIM). Commenting on Kemi's return to the fold, Wikforss said, "You could say that having Ville back completes the circle for VANDÖD, and it's great to be working with him again, especially just as we are ready to start recording. It also means we can start playing live again with a vengeance!"

Morbid Angel: 'Blessed Are The Sick' Reissue Due In July

"Blessed Are The Sick", the seminal death metal classic by Floridian legends Morbid Angel, will be reissued by Earache Records as a special DualDisc format redux edition on July 27.

Morbid Angel's second album, "Blessed Are The Sick" was originally released in 1991 and is widely regarged as one of the most important death metal releases of all time. This essential album is now due to be re-released in a deluxe, multi-panel digipack with the album on one side of the disc and an exclusive bonus DVD on the other side. The DVD side contains a brand new, exclusive one-hour documentary featuring interviews with the band and crew discussing the recording and release of the album, and highlighting the band's rise from underground heroes to worldwide flag-bearers for the death metal scene.

Check out a teaser video ad for this special edition here.

To celebrate this important release, a special limited-edition picture disc LP will also be issued, marking the first time the album has been available on this format.

Morbid Angel guitarist Trey Azagthoth recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the band's upcoming album, which will mark the Florida-based group's first release to feature bassist/vocalist DAvid Vincent since 1995's "Domination".

"We played the new song 'Nevemore' on the last tour and that kind of shows where our heads are at," he said. "I'd say it's like an assemblage of all sorts of stuff from the catalog and some new influences. I listen to a lot of hardcore [techno] music now — the fuckin' serious, artistic stuff, not that crap you hear at the clubs. That stuff has impact and it's really extreme. Even if there's no guitar in it or no real drums, the energy coming out of the speakers is amazing."

When asked who's going to be producing the album and what label it will be on, Azagthoth replied, "All I can say is, when it's ready, it's going to be extreme and outside the box. And, hopefully, the songs will inspire people to look deeper inside themselves for 'the stuff' and to tap that potential that we as human beings have."

Morbid Angel played its first show with new touring guitarist, Zyklon's longtime axemeister Destructhor (a.k.a. Thor Anders Myhren), on June 22, 2008 at the Hellfest in Clisson, France.

Although Morbid Angel's upcoming album does not currently have a name, its title will likely begin with the letter "I", in keeping with the band's tradition of titling their albums in alphabetical order beginning with 1989's "Altars Of Madness", and continuing through "Heretic".

Vader: 'Necropolis' Cover Artwork, Track Listing Revealed

Polish death metallers VADER will release their new album, "Necropolis", in Europe on August 21 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Hertz studios in Bialystok, Poland with the Wieslawski Bros.. Tue Madsen, who previously worked with such bands as MOONSPELL, CATARACT, HEAVEN SHALL BURN and many more, mixed the CD at his Antfarm Studios in Denmark.

"Necropolis" track listing:

01. Devilized
02. Rise Of The Undead
03. Never Say My Name
04. Blast
05. The Seal
06. Dark Heart
07. Impure
08. Summoning The Future
09. Anger
10. We Are Horde
11. When The Sun Drowns In Dark

Commented VADER guitarist/vocalist Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek: "Tue Madsen did tremendous work! He modeled power on this album. It is not easy to make VADER sound heavy and clear. When I was listening to the master tape for a first time, I knew after the opening notes that 'Necropolis' is gonna be a BLAST indeed!!! Tue thinks the same, which makes me even more happy. No VADER album sounded so powerful without loss of all these details in the songs. I am impressed indeed!!! We will do video clips, of course! I'm not sure yet which songs are gonna be chosen. I have some 'evil stories' in my mind just waiting to be realized. Personally, I want to see a clip for 'Devilizer', which opens 'Necropolis'. The CD front cover was done by Jacek Wisniewski and explains what's inside the album... We summoned the Old Spirits again. The Unknown is awakened...again. 'Necropolis' is exactly like the picture seen on the front cover: solid, metal and evil, with many details, backgrounds and... hidden mysteries."

The third in a series of video reports documenting the making of "Necropolis" can be viewed below. The clip features footage of Wiwczarek working on guitar solos, vocal parts and bass lines. He also reveals some of the technical details regarding the recording process and equipment.

"Necropolis" will mark the recording debut of VADER's new lineup:

Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek (guitar, vocals)
Reyash (bass)
Waclaw "Vogg" Kieltyka (DECAPITATED) (guitar)
Pawel Jaroszewicz (SOUL SNATCHER) (drums)

In early September, VADER will kick off a tour of their home country in support of "Necropolis". The Polish leg of the tour will consist of approximately 12-13 shows in some of the country's biggest cities. Every concert will be preceded by a fan meet-and-greet at the EMPik chain of stores. The trek will be a continuation of VADER's Blitzkrieg tour formula from the previous years. At the end of September, VADER will invade the rest of the European continent as part of a two-month tour with Swedish black metallers MARDUK.

Marduk Explains Absence From 'Blackenedfest' North American Tour

Swedish black metallers MARDUK have issued a statement regarding their absence from the on going Blackenedfest North American tour, also featuring MAYHEM, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, CATTLE DECAPITATION and WITHERED.

The band writes: "The situation with MARDUK not having performed during the first week of Blackenedfest is due to Mortuus, the vocalist, not having received his visa yet.

"It is not a 'denied' visa. The band filed for a P-1 non-immigrant work visa, which is required for a band to play in the states. The visa was APPROVED by the United States Government's Homeland Security Office.

"Furthermore, as required, the band members each individually went to their visa appointments at the U.S. embassy in Stockholm for the standard interview, at which point the persons handling the band's applications informed the band that there was no further action needed and that they should expect their passports in the mail with the P-1 visa attached.

"Everyone in the band received theirs except Mortuus.

"The day before tour, while the rest of the band were at the airport awaiting to board their flights to the U.S., Mortuus returned to the embassy to inquire as to the location of his passport. At this point he was informed that he was missing one document in order to finalize the visa.

"No one in the band, nor the label, was made aware of this missing form. After we were made aware of this missing document, we provided the document to the Embassy in Stockholm and we are currently awaiting each day for the passport to be returned to Mortuus with the visa stamp. The embassy is aware of the urgency of this matter and we expect the band to join the tour in progress any day now.

"MARDUK are prepared to make up the shows they missed immediately after Blackenedfest ends. These dates will be announced upon the band's arrival in the U.S.

"We are staying on top of the situation each day and hope to announce the arrival of the band soon."
Remaining Blackenedfest dates:

May 29 - Albuquerque, NM - Sunshine Theater
May 30 - Tempe, AZ - Clubhouse
May 31 - San Diego, CA - House Of Blues
Jun. 02 - Hollywood, CA - House Of Blues
Jun. 03 - San Francisco, CA - DNA
Jun. 04 - Portland, OR - Hawthorne Theatre
Jun. 05 - Seattle, WA - Studio Seven
Jun. 06 - Boise, ID - Knitting Factory Concert House
Jun. 07 - Denver, CO - Gothic Theater
Jun. 09 - St Paul, MN - Station 4
Jun. 11 - Chicago, IL - House Of Blues
Jun. 12 - Cleveland, OH - Peabody's
Jun. 13 - Detroit, MI - The Majestic Theater
Jun. 14 - Toronto, ON - The Opera House
Jun. 15 - Montreal, QC - Les Foufounes Electriques

MARDUK was scheduled to enter Endarker Studios in Norrköping, Sweden earlier this month to begin recording its eleventh album, due in September via Regain Records. The CD's release will be followed by a world tour, dubbed "Funeral Nation 2009/2010", which will kick off in Europe.

Fan-filmed video footage of MARDUK performing the song "Throne Of Rats" on December 9, 2008 at Rolling Stone in Milan, Italy can be viewed below. Photos of the concert, which also included appearances by KATAKLYSM and MORBID ANGEL, are available on the news blog Musica Metal.

MARDUK's latest album, "Rom 5:12", was released in North America in May 2007 via Regain/Koch.

MARDUK was formed by guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson with the goal of becoming the "most blasphemous band in the world." The group's musical style strarted out as straight-forward, death metal-influenced black metal, but as the years went by progressed into a fast and intense form of black metal.

Bloodbath: 'Hades Rising' Video Released

"Hades Rising", the new video from the Swedish death metal "supergroup" BLOODBATH, can be viewed below. The clip was directed by Owe Lingwall of Village Road Film. The band's performance footage was shot on location in Vallentuna outside Stockholm and "can be summoned up as some serious headbanging with lots of blood, real messy and death metal dandy!" according to the group. "The rest of the plot/storyline [was] filmed in Umeå where the footage [was also edited]."

"The Fathomless Mastery", the new studio album from BLOODBATH, sold around 1,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD debuted at No. 45 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"The Fathomless Mastery" was previously described by the band as representing "nothing but hateful brutality." Promising its "most crushing production yet," the group's lineup on "The Fathomless Mastery" is the same as that on BLOODBATH's "Unblessing the Purity" mini-CD, which came out in March 2008:

Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH) - Vocals
Martin "Axe" Axenrot (OPETH) - Drums
Anders "Blakkheim" Nyström (KATATONIA) - Guitar
Jonas Renkse (KATATONIA) - Bass
Per "Sodomizer" Eriksson (ex-21 LUCIFERS, GENOCRUSH FEROX) – Guitar

BLOODBATH released a live CD/DVD digipack entitled "The Wacken Carnage" on June 2, 2008 in Europe and June 24 in the U.S. via Peaceville. The package contains footage of the band's appearance at the 2005 edition of the Wacken Open Air festival.

Suffocation To Film 'Cataclysmic Purification' Video This Sunday

New York based extreme metal legends SUFFOCATION will film a video clip for the track "Cataclysmic Purification" this Sunday, May 31 with director David Brodsky (ARSIS, GOD FORBID, KATAKLYSM, SWASHBUCKLE). The song, which is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page, comes off the band's new album, "Blood Oath", which is scheduled for release in Europe on July 3 and in North America on July 14 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Commented SUFFOCATION bassist Derek Boyer: "'Cataclysmic Purification' audibly portrays a calamitous future approaching. With this song and the rest of the album, I think we've maintained the musical integrity of the band while still having comprehendible brutality. 'Blood Oath' combines straight forward crushing movements with unsuspecting twists that will certainly entertain everyone — from the avidSUFFOCATION listener to the first-time innocent bystanders."

Progressing Past the Metalocalypse: Opeth

AFTER BEING AROUND for nearly 20 years, Opeth can still claim to have never heard a statement like this:

"Uh, guys, mmmmmm yeaaaah, I don't know if that funky chromatic keyboard solo in the middle of the otherwise death-a-licious 'Lotus Eater' tune really fits."

"Never said anything like that," laughed Mikael Akerfeldt, the main man behind the Opeth mind meld of prog-rock, folk music and Swedish death metal. "We never even had a record label executive tell us, 'Guys, we don't hear a single.' ... I think record label people, as personal lovers of music, they're as jaded with the metal scene as many other fans are. They're likely to get excited by a funky part in the middle of 10-minute death-metal song. ... When Roadrunner heard ['The Lotus Eater'] they said, "That's really cool." But the label never advised us. ... Besides, we've been around for almost 20 years now, so why should we take advice now?"

Opeth shouldn't, which is why they're able to create labyrinthine songs such as "The Lotus Eater" from 2008's all-over-the-map headtrip "Watershed." It's a stunningly diverse album, almost to the point of distraction, but give it enough spins and the CD's intense and immense artistry becomes the focus of your ears' attention, not its restless changes.

Akerfeldt spoke to Express about the influence of Dream Theater on Opeth, concept records, whether a "Metalocalypse" character is based on him and the suicide of an ex-girlfriend who inspired three of the bleaker tracks on "Watershed."

GO HERE to check out a very candid interview with Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt courtesy of Expressnightout.com.

Behemoth Reveals 'Evangelion' Artwork

Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH will release their ninth full-length studio album, "Evangelion", on August 7 in Europe via Nuclear Blast Records and August 11 in North America through Metal Blade. The CD was mixed at Miloco Studios in London, England by Colin Richardson, who has previously worked with MACHINE HEAD, SLIPKNOT, NAPALM DEATH and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, among many others.

"Evangelion" track listing:

01. Daimonos
02. Shemaforash
03. Ov Fire And The Void
04. Transmigrating Beyond Realms Ov Amenti
05. He Who Breeds Pestilence
06. The Seed Ov I
07. Alas, Lord Is Upon Me
08. Defiling Morality Ov Black God
09. Lucifer

The digipack edition will include a bonus DVD with behind-the-scenes footage and expanded artwork.

Check out the cover artwork below.

Commented Nergal (guitar, vocals): "'Evangelion' combines a pure art form with a direct message. It was also important for us to ensure that the graphical presentation did justice to the record. Again, we have worked with Tomasz Danilowicz, who has created his best illustration yet for BEHEMOTH. The picture is of The Great Harlot of Babylon riding the seven-headed beast. Saints bow before her in worship whilst the tablets of the Ten Commandments lie broken at her feet. It represents our vision and the interpretation of the New Testament parable where the 'Whore of Babylon' is a symbol of rebellion and resistance against God. I am fascinated by stories whose source lies in the Bible and we have used biblical symbolism, coupled with my own experience and outlook, in our lyrics or on the covers of previous BEHEMOTH records. I love to juggle with meanings and play around with symbolism which is exactly what I have done in this case. The main character of our new cover is an archetype of disobedience, individualism, self-determination and a free, unfettered will — these are universal keywords which are typical and crucial in understanding the character of our works, life as a whole and the true nature of man."

Nergal previously stated about the new material, "I must confess that I'm way more excited about this record than I was for [2007's] 'The Apostasy'. It's probably the whole label situation that we had to deal back then, Inferno's injury that caused crazy deadlines that completely drained the energy out of my system… I even started treating that album as unwanted child. Weird, because from time perspective, it's a great one. This time though everything was planned much in advanced. I found time to live my life, get some energy back, get inspired and so on… When we met in October it was obvious that all of us were really hungry for making new music. It's definitely 100% BEHEMOTH. I would risk saying that we do have our own style but it's still improving, evolving in different directions every time we approach new project. Most of the songs are the really fast, technical and intense, at the same time there's a lot of diversity. There's even a very slow, massive song that's probably the most epic tracks in BEHEMOTH's history. Everything sounds more serious and…dangerous (I love that word, ha ha). There's probably more sinister vibe in our music this time too."

BEHEMOTH has been confirmed for the second annual Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, set to take place this summer. The band will perform on the Hot Topic stage alongside CANNIBAL CORPSE, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, JOB FOR A COWBOY and WHITECHAPEL on over 25 dates.
